Our Mission and Vision: Connecting the World of Tourism
At its core, ITSA is dedicated to bridging the gaps in tourism studies, research, education, and training between developed and developing nations. The association’s vision is to create a more interconnected and collaborative global tourism landscape. This is achieved by encouraging interdisciplinary research, particularly at the intersection of tourism and urban studies, and by generating practical knowledge that can inform industry best practices worldwide. By focusing on scholarly exchange, ITSA plays a crucial role in shaping a future for tourism that is not only economically prosperous but also sustainable, smart, and secure.
Experience Dynamic Events: A Legacy of Global Gatherings
For over sixteen years, ITSA has successfully orchestrated a series of impactful biennial conferences, held in even-numbered years from 2006 to 2022. These gatherings have become renowned for their intimate and collegial atmosphere, providing an unparalleled opportunity for in-depth discussion and networking.
The upcoming 10th International Tourism Studies Association (ITSA) Biennial Conference will be held in the historic city of Riga, Latvia, from September 17th to 20th, 2024. Hosted by Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, the conference theme is “Bridging the gaps in tourism knowledge and practice: The future of Sustainable, Smart and Secure tourism and hospitality (Future 3Ss for Tourism).” This timely theme will address critical issues such as safety and security, evolving traveler behavior, and the principles of a circular economy in tourism. The conference promises to be a pivotal event for academics, industry professionals, and researchers to collaboratively shape the future of the tourism and hospitality sectors.
Looking back, ITSA’s recent conferences have consistently pushed the boundaries of tourism scholarship:
- Gran Canaria, Spain (2022): The 9th Biennial Conference, hosted by the Institute of Tourism and Sustainable Economic Development (TiDES) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, marked the first time the event was held in Spain. The proceedings, including short abstracts of all papers, are available for download, with some extended abstracts accessible online.
- Jakarta, Indonesia & Singapore (2020): The 8th Biennial Conference, “Culture, People, Technology, & City Tourism,” was a landmark event, being the first to be held in a hybrid format due to the global pandemic.
